Poetry By Heart
There’s never a dull moment at Roding! Over the past half term we have been learning about all different types of poetry during our lessons. We have listened to a variety of poems by many different poets; both from the past and more modern offerings. We looked at rhythm and rhyme and many other techniques that make poems so varied and interesting. We have written our own compositions – many of which were inspired by the poets we studied.
Many of us learned poems off by heart and performed these in front of our class. Some were even braver and entered a competition called ‘Poetry by Heart’. This was the first time we have entered this competition. For this we had to learn not one, but two poems from specific time periods and perform them in front of our classes. Then the teachers had the difficult task of choosing a finalist from each class. These went on to be judged again to find the winner for each year group and then that winner went up against all of the winners across both sites judged by Mr Oldershaw and some governors…phew…what a challenge!
You can see the videos of the children that made the final right here on our website on the View of the Year page (found under the Teaching and Learning top tab). They are all amazing and rose to the challenge well. They will all be rewarded with a prize. The overall winner was Alisha (6E) – Congratulations! She did a very professional performance. Her video performance has been entered into the national competition and we are all waiting with bated breath and crossed fingers to find out how she gets on. Good Luck Alisha.
