Children enjoy talking to their friends via social media and the internet. It is essential that they are doing this in a safe, age appropriate way via sites designed for children (i.e. club penguin and kuddle). These sites have monitoring and controls embedded within them to keep the children using the site safe.
Instagram, Facebook, MySpace, SnapChat, Tumblr and Twitter are not age appropriate sites. All of the these have a minimum age limit of 13 years old. Whatsapp has a minimum age limit of 16. These sites recommend that if a child under the age of 13 does create an account it be deleted.
If your child does access any social media sites, encourage them to always use the report abuse button and block the account if another user is being rude or unkind to them and to tell an appropriate adult. If at any time you feel that their safety is being put at risk, and all of the above actions have been followed, please report the incident to the police.
The following links will take you to specific information, help and forms for each of these sites to help you make decisions about your child's social media interactions.
