Curriculum Vision

At Roding Primary School, we nurture our children, enabling them to embody our six school values and apply them to every aspect of their lives and learning.

We cultivate inquisitive, determined and respectful individuals who are aware of their own needs and how important their physical and mental wellbeing is to their futures.

The Roding curriculum is broad and rich and is reflective of our diverse community. It is enriched through knowledge, real- life experiences, opportunities for problem solving and the enjoyment and engagement it inspires.

Our curriculum ensures that our children have a greater depth of knowledge and understanding and that they can communicate clearly and confidently.

Children leave Roding with the skills, knowledge and qualities needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and be a positive force within their communities.

Curriculum Intent

In response to the needs of our community, our curriculum is designed to be inspiring, challenging, rich and reflective of our diverse community. It is rooted in our school values of being Responsible, Respectful, Resilient, Optimistic, Caring and Creative. These are taught on their own and through other areas of the curriculum, including assemblies.

The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of British Values and the core values of our society including equalities, are woven through the curriculum.

We ensure all National Curriculum subjects are viewed equally and that our curriculum promotes positive mental and physical health through experiences that broaden our children’s community capital. Reading and language development are at the heart of our curriculum design.

Implementation

Education at Roding is realized through our JOURNEY ethos. National and school requirements are mapped out as a whole school by subject leaders, and then individual year groups plan the curriculum for their pupils accordingly:

Where strong links can be made, teachers organise each half term’s learning under a ’topic’. They plan lessons to ensure the children make meaningful connections across a variety of subjects.
The curriculum is planned thoroughly and through informal assessment, teachers start with the children’s current knowledge and skills, so that progress can be made and measured. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build on skills and knowledge that they have been taught before, thereby transferring key knowledge to their long-term memory and leading to a greater depth of understanding.
Each term, there are a variety of visits and visitors planned in each year group to enrich the learning and create lasting memories via real experiences – Story-Telling workshops, Viking experience, Park trips etc. After school enrichment clubs and events extend these opportunities further and specialist teachers support the teaching of Music and PE.
Each topic starts with an Entry Point, to stimulate ideas and curiosity. All topics then finish with an Exit Point that celebrates learning.
